February 2020’s What’s On brochure, with introduction written by me, before COVID-19 changed our plans…

  • Evolving tone of voice for arts organisation

  • Content creation for social media

  • Creative copy for web and print

In January 2020 I joined the Rich Mix team on a freelance basis. I was charged with writing and subediting the organisation’s What’s On monthly brochure, and with devising and delivering a series of blogs that reflected the arts centre’s mission, vision and values. Working closely with the Head of Marketing, we created a series of interviews titled ‘Raised at Rich Mix’, which looked to highlight the work of long-term partners and practitioners who make Rich Mix the buzzing cultural hub it is today.

The blogs were underway, but COVID-19 sent many of us inside, and the centre was forced to close its doors to the public. I continued with the series, editing the initial questions to hear from the artists in times of reflection and evaluation. I also pitched and delivered a new series, Rich Mix Picks, highlighting the team’s favourite films, causes, and free family activities. In response to the Black Lives Matter protests of summer 2020, I lead on the creation of a resources list for our audience, focusing on anti-racism causes in the UK. Staff across the organisation were invited to contribute to this blog, which became one of our most-read pieces of content on the website.

While Rich Mix does a fantastic job of serving its Tower Hamlets community, the blogs I worked on helped to connect their many programmes to their mission: to welcome the communities of the world in East London to create, enjoy and share culture. By regularly documenting and sharing Rich Mix’s achievements, it became easier for the rest of the marketing team to link up the organisation’s mission with its day-to-day activities.

By the end of 2020, Rich Mix’s mission, vision and values were clear from spending just a few minutes browsing its News section and social media channels. By spending time considering how Rich Mix’s lockdown programme could be reflected on their website, I created a proper context for guest takeovers and partner features. Members of staff commented on how the blogs work to distil the purpose and aims of each programme, helping to build the reputation of the organisation.
